In 1796, the frontier town of Knoxville was officially designated as the capital of the great state of Tennessee. Knoxville has gone through an almost uncountable number of incarnations over the years. In the early 1900s, the high quality limestone and marble quarried in the region gave Knoxville the appellation “The Marble City.” Decades later, textile mills churned out undergarments for much of the South, and the city was rechristened, “The World’s Underwear Capital.” Knoxville also gave birth to inimitable forms of both early rock n roll and jazz. From the Everly Brothers to genius Bluegrass guitar legends, Knoxville has cultivated a fantastic diversity of musical talent. The city also has given the world some of Hollywood’s biggest stars, including Quentin Tarantino, the A-list Director responsible for genre busting films like Pulp Fiction and Kill Bill, and Johnny Knoxville, star of the long running Jackass series.
